Topic: Butterfly Journeys—Near and Far
Speaker: Mark Adams
Every birder knows the momentary thrill that turns quickly into a bit of disappointment when what we imagined was a bird for the list turns into a ‘mere’ butterfly. Tonight’s speaker will prove to us how mistaken we are to feel this way for even a second.
Mark Adams is a professional astronomer who has somehow either evolved (or degenerated depending on one’s biases—I have my own) into a butterfly expert as well. In addition to being an excellent birder who has given numerous talks on this pastime, he is now enough of a butterfly expert to be at the forefront of that burgeoning field too.
Mark grew up in Maryland and Pennsylvania, studied Astronomy at Penn State and the University of Arizona, and was Site Director for the U. Of Texas-McDonald Observatory in the far western reaches of that state before moving to central Virginia some fifteen years ago. In Texas he watched stars, of course, but became starstruck too or even more so than before by birds and butterflies. He has gone butterflying in Ghana and Peru as well as our own backyard and will have tons to show and tell about this exciting and relatively new pastime. We will all likely go away from this one with new eyes for the natural world. And that can never be bad.
