Monticello Bird Club Breeding Bird Survey Hike – Rapidan WMA
June 9 – 6:00 AM sharp to 11:00 AM (approx)
Note. There will be some moderately difficult hiking and stream crossings. Boots, long pants, and tick protection are recommended. However, it is an interesting birding spot with a few breeding bird species that we don’t usually encounter at lower elevations.
We will be hearing birds and be hoping to find evidence of breeding behavior such as bird song, nesting, and adults feeding young.
The club does not always run field trips in the summer, but we thought it would be good to have one where we could also help the 2nd Virginia Breeding Bird Atlas (http://amjv.org/index.php/vabba2/).
Meet to carpool at the parking lot of the Starbucks at 163 Community Street, Charlottesville, VA 22911. We will leave promptly at 6:00 AM.
We will drive about 40 minutes to the Rapidan Wildlife Management Area in Madison County. We have a written waiver to allow us to bird the WMA as volunteers for the survey. This is in a priority block for the breeding bird survey. Guy did some scouting there and heard some good birds. Please email Guy at [email protected] if you plan to join us.
This is the current status of the breeding survey for the block. You can see we have plenty of opportunities!
