    Field Trip: Saw-whet Owl Banding!

    PVBC is excited to offer a unique opportunity to see Northern Saw-whet Owl banding up close! The club will be visiting a station in western Rockingham County that bands these tiny owls each winter. The volunteers running the station will check their nets two to three times during our visit. In between net checks, they will share info about their operation, the owl species they capture, the data they are collecting and then demonstrate this process if they catch any owls. If you are interested in attending, please carefully read the information below:

    • This event is free but only current PVBC members may attend. You can join now in a few minutes and for as little as $15. PVBC is making this a rare member-exclusive event mainly due to the banding station’s limited capacity.
    • Each member may bring one non-member guest.

    • Please do not RSVP unless you (and your guest, if applicable) are reasonably certain you can attend. If you RSVP and can no longer attend, please email [email protected].
    • PVBC is scheduled to visit on two consecutive nights, Friday, Nov. 13 and Saturday, Nov. 14. Please choose one date that works for you.
    • This event is weather-dependent. A notice confirming or rescheduling the trip will be sent the morning of the trip. Weather reschedule dates of Nov. 22 and 23 have also been confirmed.
    • The banding station is approximately 1.5 hours from Charlottesville. Please take that into account along with the late nature of this event.
    • For the safety of the owls, visitors are not allowed to band or hold the owls. However, visitors will be able to get up close and take pictures (no flash photography, please!) of the owls. Owl captures and sightings are not guaranteed.
    • Bathrooms are available on site. Cell service is poor. We recommend bringing warm clothing, a flashlight or headlamp, snacks and something to sip on.

    Blue Ridge Young Birders Club

    PVBC sponsors a young birders club to foster discovery and learning about Virginia’s birds in children ages 7-16. The Blue Ridge Young Birders Club meets monthly during the first Saturday bird walks at Ivy Creek and conducts field trips in the Charlottesville area.
