PVBC is promoting a local, independently-organized volunteer effort to survey bird strikes in Charlottesville.
Window strikes are a significant cause of bird mortality. In the U.S. alone, hundreds of millions of birds are killed by colliding with glass every year.
Cville Bird Patrol is looking for volunteers to monitor buildings for window strike victims in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. This involves walking around the building(s), documenting any dead birds, and rescuing any injured birds. We also welcome additional volunteers willing to transport injured birds to the Wildlife Center of Virginia in Waynesboro. Data on dead and injured birds will be collected and used for future advocacy to reduce window strikes.
Monitoring for runs from March 15 through May 31 for the spring migration season, and September 1 through November 15 for the fall migration season. If you’re interested in participating in any capacity, please contact Tyler Demetriou at [email protected].
