The Promise of Bird-Friendly Cities
In this talk Beatley, who teaches urban planning at UVA, will review ideas and practices for making cities bird-friendly. From bird-safe glass to lights-out programs to planting native species of trees, he will discuss the range of specific steps that cities and towns can take in support of birds. Much of the talk will draw from the ideas and research included in Beatley’s recent book The Bird-Friendly City: Creating Safe Urban Habitats (Island Press). Beatley will also discuss the global network of cities, Biophilic Cities, that he helps to run, and how joining that network can support birds. The City of Charlottesville has now officially joined the Biophilic Cities Network and Albemarle County has also taken steps to join. Beatley will describe the vision of Biophilic Cities and what can be learned from cities around the world about the effective conservation of, and coexistence with, urban biodiversity (including birds).
