PVBC Meeting Minutes: March 4, 2026

Myrlene Staten, PVBC President, opened the meeting promptly at 7:00 p.m., on Zoom. There were 28 members present at the meeting.
Myrlene welcomed members and invited them to share recent interesting bird sightings in the Chat section of Zoom.
Myrlene informed members about 2 new PVBC projects – Lights Out Charlottesville & Window Strike Monitoring. Please see the PVBC website to see more information under its Projects tab.
Caroline Bertrand invited members to her house on Wednesday, March 11th, 2026 to learn and play the board game Wingspan. Potluck dinner at 5:30 p.m. and Wingspan training and play at 6:15 p.m. Email Caroline at [email protected] for more information.
Callan Bentley updated members about efforts to make Club merchandise available through Lands End. Callan and Cory Swift will revamp the Club logo so it can be better utilized in the creation of Club merchandise. Thanks to both Callan and Cory.
Christmas Bird Count Update
Jenny Gaden reported about the 2025 Christmas Bird Count (CBC). 59 people and 20 teams participated with 78 species being identified. There were 4 species of rare birds identified: 1 Northern House Wren, 2 Black-capped Chickadees, 4 Lesser Scaup and 5 Rusty Blackbirds. This is Jenny’s last year as Charlottesville area CBC coordinator. Guy Babineau will become the Charlottesville area CBC coordinator in 2026.
Membership Update
Sally Tucker shared that PVBC now has 225 members with at least 2 new members.
Upcoming Field Trips
First Saturday Bird Walk at Ivy Creek Natural Area, on Saturday, March 7th, at 7:30 a.m. Meet in the main parking lot at 1780 Earlysville Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903.

Featured Presentation
Cin-Ty Lee, Ph.D., of Rice University presented to the club about monitoring dark bird migration over Texas by acoustic monitoring. Amazing presentation. A recording of the presentation can be viewed over on the Member Information page.
Next Club Meeting
The Club meets next on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at 7:00 p.m., in person at the ICNA Education Building. The presentation will be made by Charlie Aller of the Piedmont Discovery Center about Fungi of the Piedmont.
