The November speaker will be Baxter Beamer, who is guilty of gross understatement when he wrote recently that he is “an active young birder from Charlottesville.” That he started truly serious birding only in 2015 when he joined the Blue Ridge Young Birders’ Club speaks volumes about his energy and curiosity. He has already become an inspiring fixture on the local birding scene, serving as President of the BRYBC, regional editor for Virginia Birds—the records journal of the VSO, and as a volunteer raptor counter at Rockfish Gap. He also works at Wild Birds Unlimited and birds tirelessly around the state and even beyond when he possibly can.
This summer he attended both the Hog Island Audubon Camp in Maine and the Cornell Young Birders Event in upstate New York. Though his experience at the former will be the primary topic for the evening, we can hope to learn about the Cornell program as well. Come prepared for an evening that will crackle with the sort of energy we have come to expect from past Young Birders.
In addition, let it be noted that Baxter does not settle for the low hanging fruit of spectacularly colored birds that are easy to identify. He loves birds of all shapes and sizes but has a particular fondness for shorebirds, flycatchers, and gulls. He obviously does not shy away from challenges.
